More cuts, Maholm released

The latest Reds camp roster cuts were made:

Optioned to Louisville: RHP Pedro Villarreal.

Reassigned to minor league camp: RHP Nate Adock, IF Ivan De Jesus Jr., IF Irving Falu and C Kyle Skipworth.

Released: LHP Paul Maholm.

That leaves 30 players in big league camp.

Villarreal seemed to have a solid chance entering camp after his nice second half. But he posted a 12.38 ERA in his seven games this spring.

Maholm looked very good with a 2.19 ERA in five games but wanted to start. He was told a couple of weeks ago he would be in the bullpen if he made the team.

UPDATE: The club had until Tuesday morning to either put Maholm on the big league roster, release him, or pay him a $100,000 retention bonus and send him to the Minors for 60 days until he had an opt-out in his contract.

The next round of cuts will be painful. Also, compared to last ST, this one has a number of great players that have excelled; not only SP, but throughout the lineup.
I sense that we won’t be hoping and praying for a H in the late innings as was the case last year. Often we rolled over and lost the game 2-1 or 3-2, etc. This years club will have some sting associated with it’s lineup; more importantly, clutch/R/RBI hitting.
We will find out pretty soon!

Really the only decisions remaining are a choice between Hoover and Gregg for the final bullpen slot and a question of whether Lorenzen can bump Iglesias from the starting rotation and back to Louisville.

From Mark’s writeup on MLB.com…
“That left the Reds with 30 players in camp, although three players — starter Homer Bailey, reliever Sean Marshall and outfielder Jason Bourgeois — will begin the season on the disabled list.”

“Three more cuts will be needed for the club to be at its 25-man limit before Opening Day.”
……………………………..
Hey Mark, what am I missing here? I can’t reconcile the math.

I think the 30 already takes into account the 3 on the DL. Still need 5 removed.

It does not take those 3 DL guys into account. They haven’t gone on the DL yet.

Still do not understand the numbers…
With 30 players in camp…
– 3 players to go on DL before opening day…
equals…
27…
That means we need to CUT 2 players to get
to 25, no?

Tough to let go of Maholm liek that, his fault though for not wanting to come out of the pen…..Business I guess, but I bet that guy gets swooped up somewhere real quick.

Agreed…he’ll get picked up pretty quick. Whether he’ll make it as a SP is another question, but at least he’ll get a chance somewhere.

I say lets give Lorenzen and Iglesias the starting position then release Marquis or send him to the pen. Love to see what these kids got along with DeSclafani.

Does that mean Nate Adcock will be pitching at Louisville? That’d be cool for when they come to Charlotte.

Where is the added pop for the offense. Votto, Bruce and Phillips cannot supply hits in the clutch if they are on the DL all season like Votto was last year. Still pick the Reds for dead last in the NL Central. Only time will tell.
