Trade Deadline at 4 p.m. ET

Good morning from Miami, Fla.

I’m plugged in here at my South Florida bureau (aka my hotel room) and doing my best to stay on top of the Reds potential activity leading up to the 4 p.m. ET non-waivers Trade Deadline.

There have been a couple of deals around MLB so far — with a huge one starting the morning with Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes going from the Red Sox to the A’s for Yoenis Cespedes.

In the last 24 hours or so, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted that the Reds are making OF Ryan Ludwick available. There have also been reports out of Chicago that the Reds are one of several clubs interested in Emilio Bonifacio. Those aren’t exactly face-melting moves that push then needle in either direction of buying or selling for Cincinnati. If they added just Bonifacio, I’m not seeing a huge fix in what’s been ailing the offense.

Deals can be made after the deadline but are harder to get done since players have to clear waivers and trades can be blocked.

Anything can happen in the next few hours … or of course, nothing. Stay tuned.

Emilio Bonifacio from the Cubs? 2nd base? Not great stats. WHY IN THE WORLD? Makes no sense to me. Pucker up Negron. If this goes through, you’re toast without being given a chance.

so you don’t want to make a trade just so you can play a guy who can’t even hit minor league pitching?

No, I want to give Negron the chance that Bonifacio has already had. I realize it’s a small sample size, but Negron played very well in spring training. Since AS break he is 4/15 .267. For the year 5/19 .263 2HR 4RBI. Bonifacio’s projected 162 stats are .264BA 7HR 35RBI. Why wouldn’t you want to give him the chance at no cost.

If Bonifacio replace Santiago, this trade would make more sense to me since he is a switch hitter.

The Cardinals have impoved their club by aquiring Matterson and Lackey. The Reds
are talking about these two no-names. The Cardinals prove again why they are head and shoulders above the Reds. It’s starting to become clear why the Cardinals got rid of Jocetty. The REDS are a JOKE !!!!!

Even more importantly, they are still in the hunt for Price.

Reds Dangling Mat Latos In Trades
By Steve Adams [July 31, 2014 at 1:01pm CDT]
Coming off a dreadful losing streak, the Reds have dangled right-hander Mat Latos in trades, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark (on Twitter).
The 26-year-old Latos would represent a huge impact on the starting pitching market. He’s posted a 3.31 ERA with 5.6 K/9, 1.9 BB/9 and a 32.5 percent ground-ball rate in 55 1/3 innings this season since being activated from the DL. While those strikeout and ground-ball rates are down, Latos has been among the NL’s best young starters over the past several seasons. He owns a a 3.27 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 850 2/3 innings dating back to 2010.
Latos is eligible for arbitration for the final time this offseason and would be a free agent following the 2-15 season, so he’s much more than a rental for interested parties. Of course, the Reds are looking for a huge return for their No. 2 starter, as Stark notes.

Tigers To Acquire David Price In 3-Team Deal With Rays, Mariners…
Thank you Lord; if the Cards got this guy, it could be all over.

So the Reds did nothing?

None advertised, but you never know about trades. And, Jocketty is pretty sneaky and stealthful when it comes to trades. Very hard to believe that a team out there wouldn’t at least make an offer for Latos; however, we may never hear about it unless Mark hears about it.

Its going to take a different GM to do it here. I just dont think this is going to happen with the bad signing that have been done. I would have loved to see Latos, Broxton, and Simon dealt. That would have freed up a lot of money for next year, maybe get that LF if Winkler cant fill it (which I just dont see right now). They really think this same team can compete next year? I mean Votto will be back and Bruce will probably be better, but most else will be the same if not worse.

I for one look at it this way…we need to play what we have more consistently and more carefully. Other than LF, I think we need to play our team again and again. Therefore, I throw our winning and losing directly at the feet of Price. He is a brilliant and unchallenged pitching coach. however, his day-in and day-out managerial acumen is less than positive, imo. His worst attribute is his belief that you can play any player in any position and any spot in the lineup, yet it will yield positive results.
I think he needs to re-evaluate his position on this subject. In any event, I am done for now and will post a bit later down the road; hard to watch an outcome that will result in something equal to watching the Hindenburg…’Oh the horror’…(Even with me being critical, I will always love the Reds and root for them in every inning of every game; just hard to talk about them)

Amen. I am done with Price(DWP). Todays lineup clinched for me. I, also, will always be a Reds fan and continue to watch and root for them. Don’t go away, I enjoy your comments.

Ditto ! i don’t like Dusty Price at all. He is a carbon copy of Baker , only worse. I believe the game has passed Jocketty by. He no longer has the GUTS to pull the trigger. You have to trade a player that is decent to get anything in return. Who in the world wants Ludwick . If he was any good , he would play every day. Oh wait . His manager wouldn’t play everyday if he was an all star ( Mesoraco). Castillini needs to take a hard look at GM and manager if this team is going to be championship caliber. Being competitive is no longer good enough for me and alot of other people (fans) I am off to football . The Reds are done. It appears the only way to get the Reds to DO anything is to stay away from the ball park Hit were they will feel it the most !!!!!
