Cozart snaps RISP skid
I have all the details on Johnny Cueto’s latest magnificence on MLB.com/Reds.com after a 5-0 Game 1 win over the Padres. As we wait in the press box for Game 2, here are some items of note:
*Nick Christiani was recalled as the 26th man, the roster spot allowed for the doubleheader. The 10-day wait rule did not apply here after he was sent out before Game 1.
*Zack Cozart delivered three hits in Game 1, including a two-run RBI single up the middle that completed the scoring. For Cozart, that snapped a 0-for-15 streak with runners in scoring position (last hit was on 4/22). Cozart is batting .319 (15-for-47) over his last 13 games.
“It feels good to help the team out other than defense out there,” Cozart said. “It’s been a little rough start but I work hard in the cage every day and one of these days, it will turn around.”
*Brandon Phillips (2-for-5 in Game 1) hit a three-run homer in the fifth to break up a scoreless tie. Phillips is batting .400 (14-for-35) in his last nine games since getting a day off on May 2.
*Phillips also made a nifty barehanded grab and throw on Evereth Cabrera’s leadoff ground out in the seventh.
*Todd Frazier had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
