Chapman; Bernadina can return
Two bits of news here on the Monday off day while I await word on a third much bigger item…
*The rehab assignment of Aroldis Chapman will move to Triple-A Louisville, where he is scheduled to start on Tuesday and pitch one inning vs. Norfolk. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. ET.
Chapman had two rehab appearances with Class A Dayton on Thursday and Saturday.http://bit.ly/1jvdtdE Combined, he had two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his first outings since being injured by a line drive to the face on March 19 during Spring Training.
*I’ve been told there will be more information revealed about the condition of Reds right fielder Jay Bruce today but I did learn that he is having surgery today. Bruce was scratched from starting on Sunday with a sore left knee and I confirmed that he has torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee. There is no comment yet from the Reds.
Roster wise, the Reds are in a sizable bind if they decide to get another outfielder for Bruce’s roster spot. They designated Roger Bernadina for assignment on Saturday. If Bernadina clears waivers, he can be sent outright to Louisville and then brought back since an injury renders the 10-day rule for players sent back to the Minors. Bernadina hit only .143 in 23 games for the Reds but is a defensive asset and can still come off the bench when needed.
Louisville outfielder Ryan LaMarre, is on the 40-man roster but on the DL. Jason Bourgeois is also in Louisville and has big league experience, but he isn’t on the 40-man roster. He could theoretically take Bernadina’s 40-man spot if he doesn’t come back.
At Double-A Pensacola, Donald Lutz was on a tear and batting .387/.439/.733 with five homers and 15 RBIs. Lutz also had some big league time last season when there was a shortage in left field. But Lutz has played only one game since April 24 because he spent time on the DL.
Will have more when something is known…
