Latos to start Weds

Reds manager Dusty Baker made official something that seemed inevitable. Following Tuesday’s, 4-2 Reds loss to the Mets, Baker revealed that Mat Latos would start Wednesday in the series finale. Greg Reynolds was originally listed.

Pitching Latos on Wednesday would enable him to pitch on Tuesday with five days rest before a potential Wild Card game next Tuesday. Had Latos pitched Friday as originally scheduled, he would have to work on short rest.

Other quick notes:

*A Cardinals victory over the Nationals put the Reds three games back in the NL Central with four games left. That makes winning the division slim for Cincinnati.

*The Reds bullpen dealt 7 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Mike Leake. I will have more from Leake and the full game story on

*Jay Bruce recorded his 13th outfield assist of the season when he threw out Wilfredo Tovar at the plate in the top of the second inning.

If the Reds win three out of the next four, they have a home game on Tuesday. If they win less, they are at Pittsburgh. Doesn’t matter what Pittsburgh does today. Three or four wins, home. Two or less, road.

Well, it’s still possible, if they win few enough, that Pittsburgh wins the division, and the Reds are at St. Louis, not Pittsburgh, on Tuesday.

Also, if the Pirates and Reds both lose today, and then the Reds when 2 out of 3 over the weekend, they get the home game, even winning only 2 more games. I think. Right?

The Reds offense is anemic. After the season, a strong critical look at the offensive coaches is required…along with Dusty. Team takes 6 out of 7 against the Cards and Dodgers and then bury their bats. Their pitching is strong enough to win….their bats are not…and that sucks…
