Marshall to DL

The Reds on Wednesday placed LHp Sean Marshall on the 15 day disabled list with left shoulder tendinitis. RHP Logan Ondrusek was recalled from Double-A Pensacola. Ondrusek will be here for today’s game.

UPDATE:

“He’s not able to go back to back days and that’s critical, especially with the fact we’re going to go 20 days in a row starting Friday,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Marshall. “It taxes the rest of the bullpen.”

The Reds tried to avoid making this move and hoped Marshall’s shoulder would improve with rest. The move can’t be backdated to before Monday because Marshall pitched Sunday with a scoreless innings vs. Washington. I learned that the most a team can have a DL move backdated is 10 days…but that’s all moot now in Marshall’s case.

“Monday it didn’t feel great,” Marshall said. “I would’ve liked to have bounced back but it was my first appearance in a while. We thought it was the best idea because the bullpen has been pitching and working very hard to have somebody fresh that’s able to pitch consecutive days. I was close to being able to do that … I felt like it was in the best interest of myself and the rest of the guys to take this DL stint and really continue to strengthen my shoulder and get it back to 100 percent and pitch the rest of the year without any problems.”

Ondrusek has 2 1/3 scoreless innings in three appearances at Pensacola.

Kind of frustrating they played over a week one pitcher short … only to have him pitch once and then DL him. The bullpen got a little beat up because of this, especially Hoover! It seemed silly since Marshall hadn’t pitched (before Sunday) since March 22. They could have put him on the DL and made it retroactive to 3/22 to start the season and kept one of the other relievers this entire time until Marshall was ready without sacrificing any extra time. He would have been eliigible to come off on April 6 which was before he pitched anyway. Oh well. I hope this doesn’t turn into some long term injury. Shoulder problems are never good for a pitcher. It does make more sense to me now that Para made the team …. the Reds obviously knew Marshall was not 100%. We need Marshall, so hopefully he’ll be ok after a few weeks rest but this kind of sounds like what happened to Massett a couple of years ago.

Arrendondo is not on the 40 man roster anymore. They could create the spot by putting Ludwick on the 60 day DL but they probably don’t want to expose Arrendondo to waivers again when / if they send him back down … plus he wasn’t pitching well in AAA. Ondrusek was pitching well in AA. They just need the arm more than anything, so it makes sense to go with the one on the 40 man that is pitching well.
