Happy 2013

Greetings and I hope you all had a fun, pleasant and safe holidays…Happy New Year.

The Reds certainly are hoping for bigger and better things in 2013. Do they have what it takes to go far in the playoffs. I tackled that and other questions for the new year in a story you can read by clicking here.

It was a quiet week for the Reds, which made no transactions since I last posted. I wouldn’t be shocked if a couple of more free agents are added now that we’re heading into bargain portion of the Hot Stove season. I’m thinking guys that could be added on Minor League deals with camp invites.

I have a message left with GM Walt Jocketty to see what else the club might be looking into this winter.

The next big issue will be getting the guys eligible for arbitration (Latos, Bailey, Heisey, Leake, Ondrusek and Simon) signed. The date where  salary figures must be exchanged is Jan. 18. Here are some other upcoming key dates for MLB.

Other NL Central teams have been busy lately.

*The Brewers added two lefty relievers in Mike Gonzalez and Tom Gorzelanny.

*The Pirates landed some young talent after trading closer Joel Hanrahan to the Red Sox. Before the break, they also signed LHP Francisco Liriano.

*The Cubs will announce the signing of starter Edwin Jackson this afternoon.

*The Cardinals continued to be awfully quiet.

So that leaves the Reds….how do you feel about the off-season moves already made? Is there anything else they need to do to make you feel better about the club as Spring Training nears?

I’d throw an extra couple of arms into the bullpen mix. Maybe another lefty, but there is not a lot left. Arredondo handles left handed hitters well. I think they could use some catching depth at Louisville beyond Corky so maybe a veteran there as well.

I saw today we signed a few to minor league contracts…right-hander Jeff Marquez, outfielder Derrick Robinson, and right-handed reliever Kevin Whelan. Look to me like the major moves have been made, just bringing in some minor leaguers to fill out the roster. I wouldn’t mind seeing a lefty reliever and a catcher signed to minor league deals just to give us some depth.

It’s like Walt was reading my mind. 10 days left, go Reds!!

Just want to say. I love your blog . Being a life long Red’s fan , it’s great to be able to keep up with all the news you bring. Especially during a long ,cold winter. Go Reds.

Thank you, much appreciated.

I too agree another lefty specialist would be nice to have along with another catcher for AAA and Major league back up if Mesoraco fails again. Heard anything about Kelly Shoppach?
