9/3 vs. PHI
Reds lineup vs. Phillies
*Joey Votto will be playing in what has to be his final rehab assignment game today, for Triple-A Louisville. It is Louisville’s final game of the season, and it starts at 1:05 p.m. ET. As for why Votto needs more time before returning to the Reds lineup, I will have to find out.
**UPDATE — Dusty Baker couldn’t say for sure if Votto would be activated on Tuesday.
“It’s up to him on how he feels…Joey will be here soon. We just can’t say when,” Baker said.
Votto was 1-for-3 with a solo homer for Louisville at Columbus on Saturday and did not play on Sunday. He was 1-for-5 in three rehab games for Class A Dayton last week.
“I’m not really concerned with how he’s doing as much as how he’s feeling,” Baker said. “You don’t get the same adrenaline rush. I told him to go down and look at as many pitches as possible so he could get his eyes and hands together and speed differential together. And gauging pitches, I think that’s as important as if you go down there and hit .800.
“We want him to do well but we want him to feel good. We don’t want a [Lance] Berkman situation like in St. Louis where he goes back on the DL or something happens. We want him right. We have a bit of a luxury the way guys are playing now where we don’t have to rush him back.”
*Of all the September call-ups announced over the weekend, I’m pretty interested to see LHP Tony Cingrani, who will be up on Tuesday from Double-A Pensacola. In 26 games with Class A Bakersfield and Pensacola, Cingrani was 10-4 with a 1.73 ERA, 52 walks and 172 strikeouts over 146 innings. That, as they might say, is not bad at all. I didn’t entirely expect to see him among the call-ups but he’s certainly deserving of the promotion.
