*Joey Votto is slated to begin a rehab assignment at Class A Dayton this week. If all goes ok, Dusty Baker said Votto could possibly rejoin the Reds for next weekend’s series at Houston.

Votto was told of the plan on Saturday.

“I’m a little apprehensive because I haven’t played in such a long time,” Votto said of his feelings about getting into games. “Once I get going, I will feel fine.”

Votto is continuing to make progress with his rehab and baseball activity.

“I’ve got a long way to go with my swing,” he said.

I will have a little more in my pre-game notebook later on Reds.com/MLB.com.

Glad to see Strikeout Stubbs getting a rest. Why on earth doesn’t Heisey get more time in center?

I agree totally. I think Dusty started out the year thinking that Stubbs would have matured more as a hitter and somewhere along the way forgot about his other options. Stubbs is fast but his inability to get on base either by walking or hitting really limits the effectiveness of his speed. Lots is made of Stubbs fielding prowlness, however, he isn’t gold glove material either. Heisey is a solid option at Center maybe slightly less than Stubbs in the field but it looks like our bats gain a significant advantage as well. With so many of our batters hitting below .250, we simply can’t afford Stubbs in the lineup as a regular that plain and simple.

Now an interesting add to this is if Baker gets on the Heisey bandwagon the guy is going to have fresh legs for September and Stubbs is going to be a great pinch hitter/pinch runner option off of the bases.

I agree, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on that.

Remember Dusty makes decisions with his gut! Why else do you take your best power hitter out in the seventh inning of a game you are losing. I know to save my pitching. Replace Heisey, replace Cozart( Frazier played Short two games last year). What other manager takes their best power hitter out of the game when you are losing? Sorry Dusty faithfuls I know the Reds are winning and Dusty has a winning record……But?
