Mesoraco suspended 3 games

From MLB:

Catcher Devin Mesoraco of the Cincinnati Reds has received a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire Chad Fairchild during the top of the third inning of Monday night’s game against the San Diego Padres at Great American Ball Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Unless appealed, Mesoraco is scheduled to begin serving his suspension tonight, when the Reds are to continue their series with the Padres. If appealed, Mesoraco’s suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

**The Reds have yet to announce their plan on how to deal with the suspension, or a roster move…if Mesoraco does not appeal.

UPDATE: Mesoraco said he is appealing. Here is the story.

UPDATE No. 2 — Shortly before the game, the Reds announced that Mesoraco was placed on the 7-day DL for a concussion. Dioner Navarro was called up from Triple-A Louisville. To make room on the 40-man roster, INF Mike Costanzo was designated for assignment.

Well, it is Arroyo and Cueto today and tomorrow. Hanigan would be catching them anyway. If Frazier, Cairo, or Valdez can legitimately backup then I don’t think a roster move is needed for only three games. However, you figure the Reds will go to three catchers in September and that will entail putting Navarro or Miller on the 40 man to do so. So, you could just do that now and call one of them up for a few days.

This is unfortunate because The Reds need to “give up” a player off the 40 man roster to bring someone up. I can’t imagine we would try to go with only one legitimate catcher for the 3 days. Hopefully this will work out.

Actually, since Joseph was already on the 40 man roster, his spot is taken by Broxton and since the Reds also released Brackman (who was on the 40 man) that opens up a spot for Navarro. But even if they didn’t want to do that, Negron is done for the season and could be put on the 60 day DL which would open up a spot as well. There are many options, not to mention Costanzo and Phipps also take up spots and likely won’t contribute much, if anything, to the Reds this year or in the future.

why not bring up Negron place him on the 60day DL to open up a spot on the 40 man roster

I can’t find any information on Negron. Why is he on the 7-day DL? What happened to him?

TIA guys.

he tore his ACL and is done for the season.

Corky Corky Corky!!!!!

Bring up Bo Diaz!!!!! RIP

The rules are the Reds will have to live with 24 of their 25 man field roster. Right now they have their usual 12 pitchers, 5 starters & 7 relievers. They have 13 position players, of which includes 5 bench players. To keep the position players total of 13 in tact they would have to send a relief pitcher down to AAA. If not, they send down a position player. Assuming Ludwick is one of the starting 8. The bench players are as follows…Heisey, Valdez, Cairo, and Paul. That’s 12 position players that will be left when Mesoroco starts his suspension. If the Reds want to bring up a catcher, and they should, one of the above (4) will have to go down or, I believe, one of the relief pitchers. I don’t know if the rules allow for sending down a starter…one that is not scheduled for 4 or 5 days.
I believe Mesoroco should take the 3 days ASAP because Votto will be coming back soon and that will complicate things further. Corky Miller will probably be the backup catcher.

I just read that Mesoroco is appealing, which may mean that Votto may be back and 2 players will be going down to AAA.
