Votto to have knee surgery

The Reds announced that 1B Joey Votto will have arthroscopic left knee surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus. He will miss 3-4 weeks. Below are statements from the club.

General Manager Walt Jocketty:

“Joey Votto met with the medical staff this evening and has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his left knee. He is going to have arthroscopic surgery tomorrow and should miss 3-4 weeks. Joey is very comfortable with the decision and is eager to return to the lineup.”

Votto said, “It is in my best interest and in the best interest of the team to do it now so that I can be healthy during the last two months of the pennant race.”

Votto suffered the injury sliding into third base in the fifth inning on June 29 at San Francisco.

Necessary roster moves will be made Tuesday.

***Needless to say, this means the Reds have a huge test ahead of them over the next month. Todd Frazier can likely take the majority of starts for Votto and if Frazier is needed at third base for Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo can play 1B. But that doesn’t account for Votto’s production no matter how you slice it.

Boy this is a kettle of fish—-HOW SOON CAN WE GET Kotsay or someone else?

It’s going to be a test for sure, but times like these are when stars are made. Who knows- maybe Frazier will step up huge and really make a difference.

This happened way back in the SF series and he just got to see the team doctors last night? Am I the only one here who smells a rat?

He saw Dr. Kremchek in LA. Last night was not the first time he had seen the team doctor. Truth is with a meniscus, you don’t really know when it tore. He was moving fine earlier in the St. Louis series and early on Sunday night but started moving slower late in the game.

this team NEEDS a lefty bat right now.. Russell Branyan can help right away!!.. He can play 1st and Frazier 3rd if Rolen doesnt hit.. Cant have only 1 lefty bat on this team with Votto out…Please dont bring up a dang Harris to replace Joey.. That would be a huge joke..

Hey guys, Rolen is hitting.

Tough to see such a great player like Votto go down with injury but I think the rest of the team is going to really pull through while he is gone and surprise us all. I would love to see Bruce pick it up get into one of his hot streaks right now.

This was the stretch of games that the Reds had the oportunity to pull away from the pack. Hopefully the pitching can continue to lead this team to the playoffs.

Is it just me or am I the only one who, this morning, feels like I got kicked right in nuts?!?!

If the Reds bring up Redmond for Votto, that is an interesting move.
Curt

If it is Redmond, I think it would only be for 1-2 days until Simon is available again and because of the blister on Cueto’s finger.

I think it will be Xavier Paul. I think he hits left-handed.

Kremchek is terrible everytime he examines a player he says there is no structural damage and then the next week.. surgery. He could have had this surgery before the all star break and been back in about 1 week from now.

I just hope it’s not Dioner. I don’t like that guy and he isn’t good.
Curt

I hope you had a great vacation, Mark.

Redmond makes sense especially with cuetos blister and the fact that the pen went 6 last night. got to be a first baseman call up so frazier can spell rolen when not playing first. rodruiguez i would think.

Yeah, I would like it to be Rodriquez. But I think it’s unfortunately going to be Navarro.

redmond needs to stay up until simon gets recharged. have to have a long man for the next couple of days. have to think they are looking to send bray back down also so he can get some regular work. mechanics a mess.
know phipps year long numbers arer not so hot at louisville… butr has hit like he did last year lately… might be another option.

was wrong about phipps. my mistake
