News and Notes:
*Mike Leake didn’t fare well with 3.2 ip, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. The Reds were down 6-0 after four innings. That’s three in a row rough outings — 16 runs (13 earned) over 15 2/3 innings in the right-hander’s last three starts.
“He’s working hard. He’ll find it,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Everybody is capable of having three bad ones in a row. Just don’t panic.”
*Jay Bruce and Devin Mesoraco hit homers on back-to-back pitches during a comeback attempt in the ninth. It was the first time the club has back-to-back homers this season. It was Mesoraco’s first homer of the season.
*Todd Frazier hit a RBI triple as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning. Frazier has a five-game hitting streak (5-for-6, .833 in that stretch).
*Drew Stubbs was 1-for-4 and has a five-game hitting streak.
*Joey Votto ripped a RBI double in the sixth inning following a 13-pitch at-bat vs. Wandy Rodriguez. The count was 2-2 before Votto fouled off six of the following seven pitches. Votto finally lined a double to left field that scored Stubbs.
“He took everything I had. I threw him a lot of quality pitches,” Rodriguez said of Votto. “He’s a good hitter. Everybody knows that. I give all the credit to him.”
“He’s just finding the heart of the plate sometimes, at the wrong time. This is killing him because this guy is a competitor big time. He’ll get it. He’ll figure it out. Perhaps, he should try less. He’s trying real hard, probably too hard. A lot of times when you’re not relaxed and trying too hard, it makes your ball straighten out instead of having that late life like he usually has and movement.” — Dusty Baker on Leake
“I gave them a couple of good pitches to hit. They were swinging early against me and I wasn’t making good pitches. I think I’m just trying to figure out throwing strikes and what not to give them to hit. I’m just kind of stuck in the middle right now.” – Mike Leake
