Ludwick, Francis finalized

Moves that have been in the wind for weeks finally became officially announced by the Reds.

OF Ryan Ludwick’s one-year contract with a 2013 mutual option is done. To make room for Ludwick, RHP Carlos Fisher was designated for assignment.

Ludwick had agreed to terms on his deal on Jan. 16. He will make $2.5 million this season.

LHP Jeff Francis was signed to a Minor League contract after passing his physical. He agreed to his deal on Jan. 25.

My spring training calendar window opens on a picture of the Reds bench for 2012: a nameless series of white silhouettes, with a caption – ‘Players to be named later’

Though most of the five, if not all, appear in high definition even before the Spring! Very little open outright on the 25-man.

Today’s spring training advent calendar window: Mark Sheldon packing his bag for Arizona – White socks? check. Sandals? check. Hawaiian print shirts? check. Good to go!

Denny – who’s your 25? Does Frazier make it? Francisco? Chapman?

No, yes definitely, and no, not at first anyway,in that order.

Unless something happens out of the ordinary, Francisco and Valdez are
out of options. We traded for Valdez so it would be highly odd to see
him not make the team. Francisco would be a total loss if he didn’t make
the team. It’s all basically team fiscal management.

Frazier, in all likelihood, will be sent down but available at a moments notice.
Pretty big man, big bat and plays/played 7 of 9 positions.

Chapman is the wild card and if he should find the plate, he may well push
a bullpen member or even a starting pitcher off the roster. I believe it would
be a bullpen member; dipping his toe in the SP pool on occasion.

But, we have a ways to go before those decisions must be made, remembering
that injury has a way of changing the best layed plans; unanticipated trades a
close second.
