Francis gets Minor League deal

And the Reds were not quite done…

LHP Jeff Francis and Cincinnati reached a deal on a Minor League contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network and CBSSports.com reported late Wednesday.

Reds GM Walt Jocketty told me last week the Reds were interested in adding Francis for rotation depth.

The left-handed Francis was 6-16 with a 4.82 ERA in 31 starts last season with the Royals.  The 30-year-old was with the Rockies from 2004-10 and was a 17-game winner in 2007. Lifetime, he is 61-66 with a 4.78 ERA in 181 games (180 starts).

This is going down as one of my top offseasons as a Reds fan ever! Walt really impressed me and I think he shocked us all with some great moves. My hat goes off to him.

Jocketty at his best; what a crafty guy. Couldn’t agree more with your comments.
This, the Francis move, was just another brilliant move while keeping the team
fiscally responsible and not burdening the team with mega-contracts that often
bankrupt teams for years to come; at minimum, hold them hostage.

I am a bit surprised he did not pursue Theriot, but that discussion is for another
blog.
