Willie Harris signed

The Reds agreed to terms with utility player Willie Harris on a minor league contract, two sources confirmed to MLB.com on Monday.

Harris, who will be invited to camp as a non-roster player, can earn an $800,000 base salary if he makes the club and his overall salary can reach $1 million with incentives.

Last season with the Mets, Harris batted .246 with a .351 on-base percentage, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 126 games while earning $800,000. A left-handed hitter that has played 11 big league seasons for the Orioles, White Sox, Braves, Nationals and Mets, Harris is a lifetime .240 hitter with a .330 OBP.

Harris, 33, can play all three outfield positions, second base and third base. He does not, however, play shortstop — having just eight games there out of 825 in his career. General manager Walt Jocketty had indicated all winter he was looking for added shortstop depth. Unless another player is added, the club will be set at the position with rookie Zack Cozart and Paul Janish.

Nice pick up by the Reds. I would consider him the utility guy they were looking for.

Yuck!!! This means Frazier will be in the minors and Harris and Janish will be on the Reds 25 man roster. Not liking those two guys as pinch hitters at all.

I agree. Walt might still pickup a backup SS that would be a little better than Janish off the bench as a pinch hitter. I will keep my fingers crossed that Frazier beats Harris out for a utility spot.

Harris won’t make the 25 man roster, not out of the gate. Remember, teams only take 13 position players. You have Bruce, Stubbs, Heisey, Votto, Phillips, Cozart, Rolen, Mesoraco, that’s eight. Then you have Ludwick, Hanigan, Cairo, and Janish. That’s 12. I think you would guess it would be Francisco as your lefty off the bench, that’s 13. Frazier and Harris will be left out, but not for long as we all know Heisey and Rolen will find the DL sooner or later.

I like your analysis. Think you are right on target……unless the Reds go with only 11 pitchers (a bit unlikely).

Here comes the “find the DL” guy. There’s a new one every year. Love those guys. The ones that say Heisey and Rolen will find the DL if given the chance.

Francisco has no options left. Has to be in the bigs. But yeah, you are right.
