Moderate interest in Willingham

So far, it’s been pretty quiet for the Reds on Monday at the Winter Meetings — at least in terms of moves.

“We’ve been busy though,” Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. “We’ve talked to several clubs. Nothing is close but at least I feel like things are moving in the right direction here. Hopefully before the week is over, we’ll be able to do something.”

*The Reds appear to have moderate interest in free agent OF Josh Willingham, who last played for the A’s and hit 29 homers last season mainly at a pitcher’s park like Oakland.

“I wouldn’t say it’s on the front burner,” Jocketty said of the Willingham pursuit. “It’s simmering on the back burner, if that. We are trying to find a right-handed hitter. I guess Willingham fits in that category.”

The Reds have more pressing needs on their list, but a right-handed hitting left fielder is something the club would like to add.

“It’s a logical place right now. We may end up going with Heisey and Alonso,” Jocketty said.

*There has been no talks yet with Brandon Phillips’ people. They did not arrive to town until today.

*One roster move was made — Jeremy Horst cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Louisville. Horst will be invited to Spring Training. The 40-man roster is at 39 players.

Crasnick just said the Rays are making a serious run at Willingham. Get excited Reds fans, you never know, this could be the most excitement we get all offseason.

Is Horst movement a precursor to a trade or FA signing?

I think willingham would be an excellent pickup for the Reds.

Focus on Willingham too Walt, we need a righty power-hitter between Votto and Bruce! Somebody’s gonna end up seeing better pitches! Rolen has slowed but if he still has something in his tank bat him behind Bruce…left, right, left, right, etc.

Can you imagine if Pujols and Fielder sign out of the Central?

Watched Willingham in DC in 2010. Good right-handed power, great clubhouse presence and decent defensive left fielder. Avg.dipped from .264 or so, to the .240’s last yr. but his power stats increased to 29 HR’s & 98 RBI’s. Not many out there with those credentials. With the friendly confines of the Gr. Amer. Ballpark, he would probably increase in each category (and in his avg. since he would be sandwiched in with Votto and Bruce, as commented upon). Would be a great pickup at, probably, a doable price. Would be a very good fit. Would imagine Oakland will try to keep him around.
