*At Class A Dayton on Saturday, SS Billy Hamilton became the first person in Reds organization
history to steal 100 bases. According to the Dragons web site, Hamilton became just the 12th player
in recorded Minor League Baseball history to steal 100 bases in a season. He Reds all-time
organizational record of 98 by Ramon Sambo at Cedar Rapids in 1988. Hamilton is the first player to
steal 100 bases in a season since 2001 when Chris Morris of Peoria stole a Midwest League record 111.

About the offseason–I find it really interesting that the Reds didn’t part with Ramon Hernandez this summer. It seems to suggest that they will indeed offer him arbitration; given Mesoraco’s obvious readiness and the fact the Reds control Hanigan (I believe) at reasonable cost, Walt is prepared to go into the winter with those 3 guys under control, if Ramon accepts arb. To me, the only explanation for this is that he plans to trade a package of big-leaguers or ML-ready kids for an elite player, probably a starting pitcher (Shields, etc.). If Ramon accepts, he’s got the trade chip; if not, two picks. I’m guessing this was his gamble, and I think it’s oriented toward a winter trade.
