UPDATE at 2 pm: Baker has heard nothing relating to trades from GM Walt Jocketty.

“I haven’t seen Walt,” Baker said. “I’m sure he’s on the phone some place with it glued to his ear.”

*Baker was stunned by the three-way trade that sent RHP Jake Westbrook from the Indians to the Cardinals and OF Ryan Ludwick to the Padres. But it wasn’t the Westbrook part that shocked him.

“Ludwick, I like him. He can hit,” Baker said. “He hit 37 [homers] two years ago. Wow.”

*Many are complaining that Baker doesn’t start Chris Heisey very often, even as he does well as a pinch-hitter or late substitute (ie last night). You know who isn’t complaining? Heisey.

“No matter how well I play coming off the bench, I don’t think it determines whether I should start or not,” Heisey said on Saturday. “If a guy needs a day off, I’m ready. To be honest, I’ve had so much success off the bench and not so much when I start. Obviously, everybody wants to be a starter. I don’t resent anybody for me not starting by any means.”

Heisey is a .224 hitter (13-for-58) with two homers in 16 starts. He’s batting .423 (11-for-26) as a sub, including .389 (7-for-18) with four homers as a pinch-hitter.

“I want to start but when I get to the park and don’t see my name in the lineup, I’m never mad or anything like that,” Heisey said. “I know my role. At this point, we’re winning so I’m fine with it.”

*Aaron Harang (back) threw in another bullpen session today and said he felt OK. Harang also took batting practice and didn’t seem to be favoring anything.

WOW its a dang shame we dont have a different manager that would try and play a hot hand (Nix 8 of last 10) or Hiesey over the Dynamic “K” Duel of Bruce and Stubbs.. To bad the local media wont get on him about this.. This Team isnt 8 games out and time to just let the young guys play.. they are not getting it done and Walt needs to make a splash and go after Batista of the Blue Jays.. Heck ship them Bruce and Alonso for him.. at lest that wil give the fans hope instead of watching the same 2 out fielders not hit but strike out batting after each other!! come on Walt, you want to see the stands stay filled, better get the team a bat!!.. If the Reds loose again with the K-machines in the outfield, dont expect the fans to keep coming.. the Cardinals at least did something like other contenders.. oh maybe we are not supposed to win because management is only looking at 82 wins and nothing more??? GRRRR

so you want to trade a guy with unlimited potential and the best minor league prospect for a guy who hits .260? no thanks. a REAL bat i wouldn’t mind so much, but not bautista

Here’s a question, does Jay Bruce ever work with Joey Votto on his hitting? they have the same power and ability to hit, but Joey has much better plate discipline. If not, why doesn’t Jay get some tips from his teammate on what pitches to swing at? watching the game last night with Rolen at third and 1 out, i correctly predicted that Venters wouldn’t throw a pitch that wasn’t in the dirt, and Bruce still struck out swinging, when even decent contact could have won the game for us.

Players talk to each other all the time, especially about pitchers they’re facing. But it’s one thing to talk about discipline with someone, another to put into practice. Votto is also older than Bruce with more MinorLg and MLB experience.
