*It turns out there is more to the Scott Rolen situation beyond his being sick. He is dealing with a sore right hamstring and was given a cortisone shot on Sunday. It could take a couple of more days, at least, before Rolen could be ready — if the shot worked.
“Tagging up from second to third Friday night, I felt a little burn in my right hamstring, I didn’t recover too well,” Rolen said on Monday. “And then had the privilege of throwing up in my bushes when I got home with the stomach flu. So that was just an added bonus. So had I not been throwing up the last two days I would not have been in the lineup anyway.”
The Reds can ill-afford to lose Rolen and any extended absence on the disabled list would be a huge test to the Reds pennant aspirations. They are 71-43 in games he’s started since coming over in last summer’s trade.
“Hopefully, it’s not too serious. We really don’t know yet,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Life is not pleasant without Scotty out there. You see what our record is when he’s in the lineup. It’s a Catch-22 situation. You’re operating short. You try not to use him unless it’s a dire emergency because if you have to DL him, you lose the back-date days. We’ll probably make a decision in the next day or so or sooner. It depends on how he responds to treatment.”
*Catcher Ramon Hernandez (left knee) did some catching, throwing and blocking today and was headed out to do some hitting. He is allowed to be activated from the DL on Tuesday but the club will have to determine first how Hernandez got through today’s activity.

Is Paul Janish sick or injured? Is there a reason that he hasn’t played in at least one of the games for Rolen at third base? The last time he filled in there he was spectacular defensively and had a home run and four RBI and scored three runs. Cairo committed an error on a very routine play yesterday and looked terrible at the plate. Can you find out from Baker what his thinking is? It seems like such a perfect opportunity to get Janish some playing time, at least ONE of the three games.
