Draft day — part 1

Tonight while the Reds open their four-game series vs. the Giants, MLB will be conducting the first round of the First Year Player Draft. The Reds have the 12th pick overall and are expected make their selection at approximately 8:02 p.m. ET. Coverage will be live on MLB.com and MLB Network. I will certainly have a story about the pick ASAP.

Not too many guys have a deep history against Giants starter Barry Zito.

The best is Brandon Phillips, who is 4-for-10 (.400).

Orlando Cabrera is 3-for-29 vs. Zito (.103)
Joey Votto is 1-for-6 (.167)

I understand that the offense has had a good run and the outfielders are performing, but what is the deal with Baker’s refusal to get Heisey any at bats? He has done nothing to raise doubt. (Obviously I am not going to argue about what he has proved, it is only 27 at bats and not enough to deem him an all-star). Baker just seems to display zero trust in his ability to perform.

Whether it is allowing Micah Owings to pinch hit with a full bench (and not stay in the game as a pitcher), Carlos Fisher hitting for himself against the cardinals in a game that was still within reach (7 to 3 at the time), or recently bringing Heisey in for Gomes as a defensive replacement with the pitchers spot due up next, but sliding Heisey in at the sixth slot instead of the ninth which forced Dusty to use a pinch hitter to lead off the next inning.

I wouldn’t expect him to be starting everyday when the outfielders are playing well already, but it seems like he should be getting a start at least once or twice a week while somebody gets a day off (particularly on a 20 game stretch without an off day that he didn’t see much time). It has now been 2 weeks since he has gotten a start.

It seems like Dusty is just intent on letting him rot on the bench rather than giving him the chance to prove his worth.

Do you have any insight into this?

I understand wanting more Heisey…he is a good player. But Gomes and Stubbs are both hot hands offensively at the moment. As for Fisher batting for self in STL, that was about preserving a thin bullpen, not because they liked Fisher as a hitter. I know the club likes Heisey but he’s in a role where he isn’t going to get a ton of playing time. He’s the 5th outfielder.
