Two cuts.

Only two cuts were made on Thursday afterall….

Corky Miller was sent to the Minor League camp and RHP Carlos Fisher was optioned to Triple-A Louisville.

“We’ll have most of them tomorrow,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said of the pending cuts.

No decision was made about the fifth starter — between Mike Leake and Travis Wood. Both will have to endure another restless night.

“There are a few things we have to discuss first. We’ll see,” Baker said. “There’s a lot more to it than just being the fifth starter.”

I don’t think it’s necessarily the 25-man roster holding things up – there are probably lots of conditions and possibilities regarding the players not making the major league squad, what with players not on the 40-man, and players out of options. There are only 5 or 6 spots on the 25-man left after 11 or 12 pitchers and 8 regulars. With a fourth outfielder (Stubbs / Dickerson / Gomes) and Hannigan, there are only 3 or 4 spots. I have to believe Janish makes the team as late inning defense for Cabrera. So its really 2 or 3. Let’s say three if they leave the putative 5th starter behind for the first week. Nix, Sutton or Miles, and Cairo. Best guess. Now, if getting Chapman up to 90-pitch outings was the only thing keeping him off the major league roster, then I say send him to Dayton for a couple of starts. He could go ahead and get a place to live in Cincinnati, get an Ohio driver’s license, hang out at GAB when he’s not pitchiing, and most of all, continue to work with Coach Fossas. I really don’t think Lynchburg is going to speed up his assimiliation to the American lifestyle. If not Dayton, then Louisville.
