Lots 'o offense

The 13-5 win at Arizona was a good one to get after Sunday’s tough one in extra innings and a long flight.

The Reds notched a season-high in runs scored, hits (18) and extra base hits (8).

Willy Taveras tied a career best with a 5-for-5 game and four runs scored. He has hit safely in 12 straight games. Taveras is batting .408 (20-for-49) during the streak.

Jerry Hairston was 2-for-4 and improved to a seven-game hit streak. He’s batting .414 (12-for-29) over that stretch. The top 2 in the order are setting a good flow all the way through.

The Reds, winners of four of their last five games, have scored five runs or more runs in eight of 11 games in May. After having a Major League low .208 on April 18, the club has raised its average to .262, which is tied for fifth best in the National League.

“We have to stay after it,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “I knew these guys were going to hit because we work at it a lot. Our pitching carried us through that first month. Hopefully our hitting is here to stay and we can use both weapons – our pitching and our hitting. We have to tighten up our defense some, a lot actually. If we do that, we’ll really be rolling.”

“We knew that we have quality players here that could hit. Guys are starting to get their confidence. Having our pitchers continue to pitch well helps the hitters too. We just needed to score some runs – four, five and six runs and we have a chance to win a ballgame.”

I was at the game and overheard a Dbacks fan say after looking at the reds lineup, “No household names in that lineup”.

I think he now knows those names.

It is a great win after a long flight!

Outstanding ballgame offensively! I think the best stat was 7-18 with runners in scoring position.Russhttp://wight4256.mlblogs.com

lol, yeah I fell asleep in the bottom of the 6th, but I’ll admit I was smiling all the way through it.

Mark, with Rosales, Janish, and Hairston all playing so well, what do you think Dusty is going to do when Gonzo and Encarnacion are on the mend. I hate to see .150ish hitters replacing .250ish.

rykysouth, you got it there. What does happen? How can you not play Hairston? Then when EE is healthly what then? I know he will play but what if he hits .200-.250 over the following 2 weeks? I can accept Nix get the bench so Hairston can play but the Rosales-EE debate could last through June. I hoped EE would improve but so far not so good.
Man, Nix has looked good.

Mark, is there a chance we will see Gomes anytime soon or is there some “problem” in bringing him up to replace McDonald? Surely there is no one left on earth who thinks McDonald is a better RH option than Jonny!?!? I know Gomes isn’t tearing up AAA but he’s been pretty consistant over the last couple of weeks, has cut his Ks down some and is hitting for power.

McDonald has one extra basehit all season and I don’t think he’s had a swinging bunt hit in the last 10-15 games! I realize too that there is a guy or two at AAA that might look attractive to the average fan but Jonny has been there and has performed at the big league level before….why did they sign him if he’s relegated to AAA all season? Thanks for any insights you might have (anyone else feel free to chime in if you can add something constructive).

Thank You! I am not the only one out there that thinks McDonald needs to go. Why not give Gomes a chance, especially at GABP. Owens is a better right handed batter coming of the bench than McDonald. I mean the guy swung at a pitch, when the pitcher had thrown something like 8 balls in a row, and he grounds into a doubl play.
