Fifth starter choices

The Reds main candidates for the rotation’s fifth spot have gotten at least one turn to pitch this spring. Here’s out it looks to this point:

Homer Bailey: 2 G, 1 GS, 4 IN, 0R, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K

Micah Owings: 1 G, 1 GS, 3 IN, 0R, 2H, 0 BB, 2 K

Nick Masset:  1G, 1 GS, 1 IN, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 0K

Daryl Thompson: 1G, 0GS, 2IN, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 0K

Ramon Ramirez: 1G, 0GS, 1IN, 5R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K

Notes: Bailey has looked sensational and Owings also looked strong. Thompson, who is considered to have an outside shot, was also strong. Ramirez gave up a grand slam following a two-out error that should have gotten out of an inning. Masset was a little too amped up and struggled in his start.

Other considerations: Bailey seems to have a new and improved attitude. Owings is good hitter and can also be used as a pinch-hitter. Masset is the only one in the group out of Minor League options. The club hasn’t ruled out sending any of the pitchers that don’t win the fifth spot to the bullpen.

Based on one time through, who do you like in the fifth spot to this point? Who will get it? Who should win the job?

Right now I think the favorite choice would be Homer Bailey, just solely based on the high strikeout total. But Michael Owings is obviously a proven pitcher himself. It’s tough. Honestly, right now I’m pulling for Homer harder than a child yanks on a loose tooth.

There’s no mystery here. It comes down to who has options, same as last year. Bailey to AAA, Owings starts and Masset is the long reliever, unless Bailey puts together a Josh Hamilton type spring, but it’s much to early for that kind of talk.

homer or owings…a lot can happen in a month though.

Lets put it this way. If Owings and Homer continue to play this well through July. You could see a trade for that RH hitter the Reds wanted with one of the other SPs.

Unless Owings has a terrible spring I think he gets the spot. Homer will likely start out in AAA…and if he dominates for the first couple of months, which I hope he does, I wouldn’t doubt that they start to shop Arroyo…especially if Thompson keeps getting batters out. Massett will be a long reliever.

I’ve been hoping Micah Owings would make the 5 spot, but at this point, I’m reconsidering. Now I’d like to see Bailey pan out and send both Masset and Owings to the bullpen. I’m sure Dusty would have a field day working Owings in and out of games.

Homer, definitely Homer. He’s ours, homegrown, and it’s ridiculous that people have written him off already.

This is a really nice problem to have!
